Frequently asked questions
1. How strict are the recommended age limits for the children’s language courses?
The recommended age limits are there as general guidelines. As a parent, you are the best person to assess your child’s readiness to learn new skills, as each child progresses along their language journey at their own individual pace.We also aim to be flexible whenever possible by allowing younger siblings to join the same small group as their older siblings, so the language and cultural experience can become a shared family adventure.
2. Do you offer any trial sessions or introductory classes for new students?
If you are joining a Linguajoy Language Course for the first time, it is possible to have a one-time trial lesson with a single-lesson fee. For trial lesson reservations, please contact us at info@linguajoy.fior tel. 041–319 6675.
3. Can the child’s parent(s) be present and participate in the lessons?
With our youngest language learners, we progress gently one step at a time. At the very start of the course, having a familiar adult present in the background may provide comfort as the child adapts to the environment.
However, based on our experience, even after just a couple of lessons the youngest learners often happily run to the teacher on their own — giving parents a moment to breathe and enjoy some free time. Children’s learning experiences are usually more effective and smooth when several parents are not present in the classroom.
4. Is it possible to join a language course in the middle of the study year?
Yes, absolutely! Our courses are designed so that it is easy to join the language journey at any point in the academic year, provided there is available space in the group. If you join mid-semester, you will only need to pay for the remaining lesson hours. Before reserving your place, please contact us at info@linguajoy.fi or tel. 041–319 6675, and we will provide you with a code that calculates the remaining course fee.
5. How do I know if there is space available in a specific course?
The Linguajoy Office will be happy to check availability for you. Please contact us at info@linguajoy.fi or tel. 041–319 6675.
6. What happens in the children’s language courses?
Our lovely native-language Linguajoy teachers provide an authentic experience in pronunciation and culture. At Linguajoy, children learn new languages in a functional, multisensory way — through games, play, arts and crafts, science, music, movement, rhythm, and drama.
For younger students, the language journey is opened gently through nursery rhymes, songs, rhythm, and playful activities. Oral skills are developed by building key vocabulary, learning useful phrases, and exploring different sentence structures. In school-age groups, we develop strong foundations in international interaction and presentation skills.
As the course progresses into advanced levels, we increasingly focus on more diverse interactional situations as well as reading comprehension and writing practice.
7. Should we bring anything with us to the language course?
All teaching materials are provided by the Linguajoy teacher, so there is no need to bring anything other than an open and enthusiastic mind! If you wish, you may bring comfortable indoor slippers.
For Active English (Sportti-Enkku) courses, we recommend wearing comfortable indoor sports clothing and bringing a small water bottle.
8. When do the Linguajoy language courses meet? Are there breaks?
The Linguajoy academic year begins at the end of August and generally follows elementary school schedules and national holidays. The autumn break takes place in mid-October (week 42). The Christmas break begins on December 23rd. The spring semester begins immediately after Epiphany.
The Ski Holiday (winter break) for Southern Finland takes place in February (week 8). On Maundy Thursday, daytime courses proceed as normal, while evening courses do not meet. The Easter holiday is observed on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, and Easter Monday. On May Day Eve, daytime courses proceed normally, while evening courses do not meet. May Day (1.5) and Ascension Day are national holidays with no classes or open office hours.
9. What can we do to prepare for the start of the language course?
As a new and exciting language journey approaches, it is helpful to gently remind your child in advance that the course will begin soon. Let them know they will be joining a fun and inspiring language club — this helps create a smooth and gentle transition into a new learning environment.
Motivation can be encouraged at home by listening to music in the target language, watching TV shows, or reading books — wonderful ways to awaken the language journey. It is also helpful to arrive at the venue on time, giving you and your child a moment to become acquainted with the teacher and classroom.
Children and young people acquire language functionally through repetition — often without even realising it! After each lesson, you might ask open questions such as “What did you do in the course today?” Allowing your child to express what they experienced and enjoyed in their own words helps them connect with their personal language path.
10. Why introduce foreign languages as early and as diversely as possible?
The language-learning sensitivity period is a unique neurolinguistic phase in which children are naturally motivated and open to new languages. Even at six months of age, there is great intrinsic capacity for language acquisition.
Functional play, funny rhymes, and melodic songs support children as they explore new languages. As they grow, this powerful sensitivity period gradually fades.
At that stage, learning may feel more laborious, and achieving a natural-sounding accent can be more challenging. For this reason, early and varied exposure to foreign languages is recommended — when learning is easy, playful, and beneficial!
